Our visit to Lombok was more than just an experience. We had the aim of bringing additional tourism back into Lombok. Following the 2018 wars, tourism slowed significantly on the island and the local market taking a massive hit. But we are pleased to state Lombok is back in business and we wholeheartedly suggest seeing! It has been one of our favourite trips we have taken and we hope this will be a destination we all continue to go back to!
Though Lombok is famous for its adventure activities and magnificent beaches, the area’s exceptional neighborhood. Sasak culture will soon be fascinating to find out about for almost any traveler, between lazy beach days and trekking volcanoes, strategy several regional excursions to find out more about the background and customs of Lombok.
- Lombok Pottery Center
Lombok is famed for its pottery and in case you are considering the creation, Lombok Pottery Centre is the place to see. The LPC is a cooperative of over 200 female potters who discuss the job gains, so everybody prospers. They have many tour options available, such as a trip to Banyumulek Village, a neighboring village where they construct the pottery.
Visitors get to observe the procedure, by the invention of the clay into the casting of the merchandise, to the outside kiln they have created. Even when you’re not into pottery, then this is a fantastic chance to be encouraged to go to a local village and meet a neighbor. Each one of the potters we met was so composed. Plus you have to pay a stop by the LPC workplace and decide on a bit of pottery to receive engraved and shoot home.
- Learn about Islam at Mataram
Indonesia is a nation of several distinct religions, but the vast majority of the islands have been Muslim. Bali is predominantly Hindu, Lombok is Muslim, and the neighboring island of Flores is Catholic. If you are interested in learning more about Islam at Lombok, a trip to the Islamic Center Mosque at Mataram will be a perfect chance. The colours and design of this mosque are rather magnificent.
After paying an entry fee, a manual can take you up into the 9th floor and 13th floor, at which you’ll acquire beautiful views overlooking the town below. Don’t forget to dress appropriately. When for any reason, you are turned off (it seems like that occurs on occasion), then you’re still able to delight in the beauty of this mosque from the outdoors, particularly at night, once the building is lit up with bright lights.
- Neighborhood Village Tour
Among the things which make Lombok exceptional is the native Sasak culture. Many villages have opened their doors to tourists, where you can observe the traditional houses made from bamboo and thatched roofs. Sade Village is a traditional Sasak village that’s most likely the most touristy of these available to see. We have heard stories of tourists being forced to buy souvenirs, but many others have appreciated the simplicity of having the ability to go to.
We visited a little Sasak village through the walking tour in Senaru. It had been the village of the manual’s family, therefore we felt comfortable viewing it within the home of his parents instead of a stranger. Other tiny villages which were recommended for people are Desa Beleq along with Segentar. We actually recommend only seeing these villages using a Sasak manual who will communicate with you personally. When visiting a nearby village, it is essential to be respectful and inquire before taking any photographs and giving a wide berth to any exploitative excursions.
- See a Weaving Village
Weaving is just another craft that Lombok is well-known for. Sasak ladies learn how to weave at a young age, and also the artwork was handed down through several generations. Following the Sasak convention, all girls have to have the ability to weave, or else they won’t be permitted to get married. There are many villages where it is possible to watch weaving presentations, or perhaps you just encounter local girls weaving while vacationing about Lombok.
If you are searching to go to a weaving village, it is possible to visit Sukarara Village, in which they operate weaving excursions. You will be guided to a gift store and sold fabrics at a markup. However, seeing a village enjoys this usually means obtaining a close look at the manufacturing procedure and the chance to ask questions regarding the convention. In Sukarara, they also dress you up in costume and take photographs before a traditional Sasak home if that is your jam. Though it’s a small touristy, your money goes straight back to the community instead of via a third party excursion business.
- Narmada Water Park
You won’t find any water slides or even log rides, the Narmada Water Park is more of a water temple. Historically, Narmada was used in spiritual ceremonies in the park’s most Hindu temple. Now, it is a beautiful spot to spend the day, like the gardens, and have a sip of this sacred water that’s believed to make you look ten years younger.
